Family Vacation in Myanmar Tour

Overview:

Arrive in Yangon where giant reclining Buddhas, glittering stupas, and colonial buildings are waiting to be explored.  A visit to the ‘National Races Village’ is a fabulous introduction to the various ethnic minorities living in Myanmar and opportunities to try on traditional costumes and try out various traditional crafts is a fun hands-on learning experience.

Take a boat cruise out of Yangon to the village of Twantay. As you meander down the river, watch fishermen who use traditional nets and techniques as they try and catch their evening meal.  A local trishaw tour takes you through the pottery village of Twantay, to its colourful market, and amongst the friendly locals.
Fly to Bagan, where thousands of stupas and temples are ready to be explored. Kids of all ages will enjoy climbing to high platforms for sweeping views and discovering painting-filled hidden chambers amongst the temples.

Beyond the temples, Bagan is filled with workshops where the craftsmen will invite you to try your hand at their trades. And a visit to a local school gives your family the chance to interact with friendly students and learn about the educational system in rural Myanmar.

Continue to Inle Lake, a spectacular expanse of water surrounded by the green Shan hills. Cruise the lake in a longtail boat, exploring the stilted villages, floating gardens, and resplendent temples. Try your hand a Burmese cooking as you prepare dinner with the help of a local Intha family and dine together in their stilted house overlooking the lake.

Itinerary:

Day 1 – Arrive Yangon (L,D)
Welcome to Yangon, a relatively quiet and charming city filled with colonial and spiritual heritage. After a delicious lunch, set out on a tour of the National Musuem and the massive reclining Buddha at Kyaukhtatgyi Pagoda. As the sun sets over Yangon, enjoy the changing colours on the magnificent golden stupa of Shwedagon Pagoda.

Day 2 – Yangon (B,L,D)
Take a guided walking tour amongst the local shops, green parks, and colonial era buildings of central Yangon. After a delicious lunch, transfer to the National Races Village where you can explore the different ethnic minorities residing in Myanmar. Dress up in traditional costumes, visit stilted houses, as you learn about the fascinating diversity of Myanmar.

Day 3 – Yangon – Twantay – Yangon (By boat) (B,L,D)

Fly to Bagan, home to thousands of temples scattered about the plains of the Irrawaddy River. Spend the day touring the ruins, including the glimmering Shwezigon Pagoda, elegant Htilominlo Temple, and Ananda Temple, an architectural masterpiece. In the late afternoon, board a horse cart, still used by the locals for transportation, and enjoy a relaxing ride through the temples as the sun sets. Over dinner, be entertained by a traditional marionette show, filled with music, elaborate puppets, and entertaining stories.

Day 5 – Bagan (B,L,D)
An optional sunrise hot-air balloon flight over the temples is an unforgettable and unique way to start the day! Spend the morning with the students at a rural primary school, whose warm smiles and friendly greetings are sure to warm your heart. In the afternoon, explore the workshops of the village artisans who make local plum jam, lacquer ware, traditional oxen carts, and other handicrafts.

Day 6 – Bagan – Heho – Inle Lake (B,L,D)
The morning is at your leisure before flying to Heho and transferring by road to Inle Lake, a massive freshwater lake set amidst the Shan hills. Board a private motorboat to travel through canals and on to your lake front hotel. Pass stilted villages, leg-rowing fishermen, and floating gardens as you cruise out along one of Myanmar’s most spectacular areas.

Spend the morning meandering through the waters of Inle Lake, stopping to visit monasteries and local workshops such as blacksmiths and weavers. In the late afternoon, a local leg-rowed canoe will take you to an Inntha family’s house where you will join them in preparing a delicious meal and dining together. Be sure to bring your camera as this unique opportunity to interact with a friendly local family is sure to be a highlight of the trip.

Day 8 – Inle – Heho – Yangon (B,L)
This morning, relax at your leisure and soak in the tranquil surroundings of Inle Lake before transferring back to the airport. Upon arrival in Yangon, the evening is at your leisure for last minute sight seeing or shopping. As your day comes to an end, reflect back on your amazing family holiday in Myanmar.

Day 9 – Depart Yangon (B)
After breakfast at the hotel, transfer to Yangon International airport for your onward flight
